Forgiving Again: When Old Wounds Resurface

One of the most discouraging parts of forgiveness is realizing you may need to forgive more than once. You thought you were past it—then a memory, a comment, or a familiar situation brings the pain back.
This doesn’t mean you failed. It often means the wound is deeper than you knew, and God is continuing His healing work. Forgiveness can be a decision you reaffirm as your heart is restored over time.
Scripture
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’” (Matthew 18:21–22)
Why repeated forgiveness matters
Jesus isn’t giving a math problem—He’s describing a lifestyle. Repeated forgiveness keeps bitterness from taking root again. It also reminds us that our hope is not in perfect people, but in a faithful God.
A prayer for the moment it resurfaces
“Jesus, You know this still hurts. I choose forgiveness again today. Heal what’s tender in me, and guard me from bitterness. Teach me to walk in freedom.”
Reflection question
When the pain returns, what helps you move toward God instead of replaying the offense?
