Prayer & Spiritual Growth
What is prayer?
Short Answer
Prayer is personal communication with God. Christians pray to worship Him, confess sin, give thanks, seek wisdom, present needs, intercede for others, and align their hearts with His will. Prayer is not a formula for controlling God or demanding preferred outcomes. Through Jesus, believers may confidently approach God, trusting His wisdom, love, and perfect timing.
Prayer is the most common Christian practice and the one people feel worst about.
Usually because they have been taught to treat it as a performance.
Prayer is conversation, not a formula
Jesus addressed this directly, and He was blunt about it.
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Volume is not the point. Vocabulary is not the point. Posture is not the point.
You are speaking to a Father, not petitioning an official.
What Christians actually pray about
Worship, because He is worth it.
Confession, because you need it.
Thanksgiving, because you forget.
Requests, because He invites them.
Others, because love does that.
Wisdom, because you do not have enough.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
In everything. Nothing is too small to bring and nothing is too large.
You do not need special words
You can come tired, angry, confused or empty.
The Psalms are full of prayers that would never be read aloud in a service.
God is not offended by honesty. He is already aware of the thing you are trying to phrase carefully.
You can come with confidence
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Boldly, because of Jesus. Not because you have earned an audience.
Prayer is not leverage
Prayer is not a technique for moving God toward your preferences.
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
According to his will. That phrase is not a loophole. It is the whole posture.
Real prayer changes the person praying at least as often as it changes the circumstance.
So what is prayer?
Talking with God.
Honestly.
Regularly.
Without a script.
Through Jesus, who made the access possible.
It is a relationship, not a transaction.
Bottom line
Prayer is where believers worship, confess, give thanks, ask and intercede, bringing their hearts into line with God's will. Through Jesus you may come confidently, trusting His wisdom and His timing rather than your own.

He sees the entire picture while people see only part. Scripture calls believers to pray in faith and according to His will. Unanswered desires can hurt deeply, yet God remains good, present, wise, and trustworthy.Read answer →

- Prophecy & End TimesWhat does the Bible say about Israel? The Bible presents Israel as God’s chosen nation—a people He called through Abraham, delivered from Egypt, and gave the land of Canaan. God made an unconditional covenant with them, and though they were scattered for disobedience, the prophets promised a future restoration. Paul insists God has not cast away His people. In this reading, the church and Israel are distinct, and God’s promises to Israel will be literally fulfilled.Read answer →

- Doctrine & TheologyAre angels watching over us?Yes. Scripture teaches that angels are real, created spirit beings who serve God, and part of their work is ministering to and guarding believers. Hebrews 1:14 calls them “ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation.” Psalm 91:11 says God commands His angels to guard His people. This is God’s care at work—the angels do His bidding, and the worship belongs to God alone.Read answer →
