What Does the Bible Say About Love? Scripture's Most Powerful Verses and Teachings

Few topics appear more consistently throughout Scripture than love. From the first chapters of Genesis to the final pages of Revelation, the Bible speaks of love — God's love for humanity, the love humans are called to show one another, and the nature of love itself.

The Foundation: God Is Love

"God is love," writes the apostle John in 1 John 4:8. This isn't just saying that God is loving — it's saying that love is the defining essence of who God is. "We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19).

The Greatest Commandments: Love God, Love Others

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments" (Matthew 22:37–40).

The Most Famous Passage: 1 Corinthians 13

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." (1 Corinthians 13:4–7)

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:13)

God's Love in Action: John 3:16 and Romans 5:8

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

Love Your Neighbor — Even Your Enemy

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:43–45).

The New Commandment: Love as Jesus Loved

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34–35).

Nothing Can Separate Us from God's Love

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38–39).
