When you think of Moses, you might picture the burning bush or the parting of the Red Sea. But behind every great leader, there's often a quieter, supporting figure. Aaron, Moses' older brother, was that figure. He wasn't the headline act, but without him, the story of the Exodus might have ended very differently.

Aaron was a Levite, the tribe set apart for religious service, and he lived during the time of Israel's slavery in Egypt. He was Moses' spokesperson because Moses felt he wasn't eloquent enough (Exodus 4:14-16). But Aaron was more than just a mouthpiece — he was a priest before there was an official priesthood. His life is mainly told in the books of Exodus and Leviticus.

Their Story

Aaron's defining moment came when God called him to stand beside Moses before Pharaoh. Together, they demanded, "Let my people go." Aaron's rod became a serpent, and later he stretched it over the Nile, turning it to blood (Exodus 7:10, 20). He was God's instrument for many of the plagues, acting as Moses' hands.

But Aaron's story isn't all glory. When Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, the people grew restless. They pressured Aaron into making a golden calf, and he gave in (Exodus 32:1-6). This was a serious failure, yet God didn't discard him. After the incident, Aaron was still chosen to be the first high priest, and his sons inherited the priesthood. Later, when his two sons died for offering unauthorized fire, Aaron "held his peace" (Leviticus 10:3), showing a deep, painful submission to God's holiness.
