Who Was Jesus of Nazareth?

No figure in human history has shaped the world more than Jesus of Nazareth. More books have been written about him than any other person who ever lived. More art, music, and literature have been created in his name than in honor of any other human being. The calendar that most of the world uses today is divided by his birth. More than two billion people alive right now identify as his followers.

And yet his public ministry lasted only about three years. He never wrote a book. He never led an army or held political office. He died in his early thirties, executed as a criminal by the Roman government, in a small corner of the Roman Empire. By any conventional measure of historical significance, his story should have ended there.

It didn't. Here is who Jesus of Nazareth was — and why his story still matters more than any other.

His Birth and Early Life

Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a small town in the region of Judea, to a young woman named Mary and her husband Joseph, a carpenter. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke record that his birth was announced by angels and that he was conceived by the Holy Spirit — that Mary was a virgin when she conceived him. This claim — the virgin birth — is one of the foundational doctrines of Christian faith.

The family fled to Egypt shortly after his birth to escape the murderous paranoia of King Herod, then returned to settle in the small town of Nazareth in Galilee. Almost nothing is recorded of his childhood except one visit to Jerusalem at age twelve, where his parents found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers and astonishing them with his understanding.

For roughly eighteen years after that, nothing. He grew up in Nazareth, learned his father's trade, and lived — as far as history can tell — an entirely ordinary life in an unremarkable town.

Three Years That Changed the World

Around the age of thirty, Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by his cousin John the Baptist. The Gospels record that the heavens opened, the Spirit of God descended on him like a dove, and a voice from heaven said: "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

What followed over the next three years was unlike anything the ancient world had seen. Jesus traveled through Galilee, Samaria, and Judea, teaching in synagogues and on hillsides, healing the sick, restoring sight to the blind, raising the dead. He called twelve ordinary men — fishermen, a tax collector, a political revolutionary — to be his closest disciples. He ate with sinners, touched lepers, spoke to women in public, and defied the religious establishment at every turn.

His teaching was unlike anything the people had heard. "You have heard that it was said... but I say to you." He reinterpreted the Law not to abolish it but to fulfill it at a deeper level than the surface observance of rules. He spoke of the kingdom of God as something not merely future but present — breaking into the world through his own person and ministry.

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." — John 14:6

The Crucifixion

The religious leaders of Jerusalem — threatened by his authority and popularity — conspired to have Jesus arrested. One of his twelve disciples, Judas Iscariot, agreed to identify him for thirty pieces of silver. Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, tried before the high priest and before the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, beaten, mocked, and crucified on a cross outside Jerusalem on a hill called Golgotha.

He died. There is no serious historical dispute about this. Roman crucifixion was designed to be fatal, and death was confirmed before the body was taken down. He was buried in a tomb belonging to Joseph of Arimathea, and a large stone was rolled in front of the entrance.

The Resurrection

Three days later, on the first day of the week, the tomb was empty. The stone had been moved. The grave clothes were lying there, but the body was gone. Over the following forty days, the risen Jesus appeared to his disciples — first to Mary Magdalene, then to Peter, then to the twelve, then to more than five hundred people at once (1 Corinthians 15:6).

The resurrection is the central claim of Christianity and the event on which everything else depends. The disciples who had fled in fear on the night of the arrest were transformed by it into men and women who could not be silenced by imprisonment, beatings, or death. They went to every corner of the Roman Empire proclaiming one message: Jesus, whom you crucified, has been raised from the dead.

Why He Still Matters

Whatever one concludes about Jesus of Nazareth, it is impossible to engage seriously with human history, Western civilization, the Bible, or the world's two billion Christians without grappling with his story. The question he posed to his disciples at Caesarea Philippi remains the most important question any person faces: "Who do you say I am?"

He “made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:7-11).”

Jesus is the "I am" that "I am"

the voice of the burning bush

the Captain of the Lords hosts

the conqueror of Jericho.

Jesus is enduringly strong

...entirely sincere

...eternally steadfast

Jesus is immortally graceful

...imperially powerful

...impartially merciful

In Him dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily,

the very God of very God.

He is our kinsman redeemer and our avenger of blood,

He is our city of refuge,

...our performing high priest

...our personal prophet

...our reigning King.

Jesus is the loftiest idea in literature,

He is highest personality in philosophy,

He is the fundamental doctrine of theology

He is the supreme problem in higher criticism

He is the miracle of the ages, the superlative of everything good.

We are the beneficiaries of a love letter

written in blood

on a wooden cross over 2000 years ago in Judea,

He was crucified on a cross of wood

yet He made the hill on which it stood.

By Him all things were made that were made,

without Him not anything made that was made.

By Him all things are held together!

What held him to that cross?

It wasn't the nails as anytime he could have said "I'm outta here"

It was His love for you and me!

Jesus was born of a woman so we could be born of God,

He humbled himself so we could be lifted up,

He became a servant so we could become co-heirs,

He suffered rejection so WE could become his friends,

He denied Himself so we could freely receive all things,

He gave Himself so He could bless us in every way.

He is available to the tempted and tried,

He blesses the young,

He cleanses the lepers,

He defends the feeble,

He delivers the captives,

He discharges the debtors,

He forgives the sinners,

He franchises the meek,

He guards the besieged,

He heals the sick,

He provides strength to the weak,

He regards the aged,

He rewards the diligent,

He serves the unfortunate,

He sympathizes and He saves!

His offices are manifold,

His reign is righteous,

His promises are sure,

His goodness is limitless,

His light is matchless,

His grace is sufficient,

His love never changes,

His mercy is everlasting,

His word is enough,

His yoke is easy and His burden is light!

I wish I could describe Jesus to you,

...He is indescribable

...He is irresistible

...He is incomprehensible,

...He is invincible!

The Heaven of heavens could not contain Him,

man cannot explain Him.

The Pharisees could not stand Him and learned they couldn't stop Him.

Pilate couldn't find any fault with Him

and the witness couldn't agree against him.

Herod couldn't kill him,

death couldn't handle Jesus and the grave couldn't hold him!

Jesus always has been and He always will be,

He had no predecessor and He will have no successor,

You can't impeach Him and He ain't going to resign!

His name is above every name, that at the name of Yeshua!

Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord!
