Is Satan real?
Short Answer
Yes. Scripture presents Satan not as a myth or a symbol but as a real, personal, created being who fell through pride and now opposes God and deceives the world. Jesus spoke of him as a real adversary and called him “a murderer from the beginning” and “a liar.” The Bible describes his origin, his work, and his final defeat. Denying his existence plays into his deception, because a hidden enemy is the most dangerous kind.
Not a symbol, a person
Scripture never treats Satan as a metaphor for abstract evil. It speaks of him as a personal being with a will, a mind, and a mission. He tempts, he accuses, he deceives, and he speaks.
Jesus addressed him directly as a person:
Scripture · John 8:44
“He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth... he is a liar, and the father of it.”
His origin
Satan is not eternal and not God’s equal. He is a created being—an angel—who fell through pride:
Scripture · Ezekiel 28:15
“Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.”
The prophet describes his fall and the pride at its root. Revelation identifies him as the serpent who deceives:
Scripture · Revelation 12:9
“That old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world.”
His work today
Satan’s chief work is deception. He masquerades and he attacks:
Scripture · 1 Peter 5:8
“Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
He blinds the minds of those who do not believe (2 Corinthians 4:4), accuses the saints (Revelation 12:10), and sows lies. His most effective trick is convincing people he does not exist—an enemy you do not believe in is an enemy you cannot resist.
His defeat is certain
Satan is real, but he is not sovereign. He is a defeated foe:
Scripture · James 4:7
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
And his end is fixed:
Scripture · Revelation 20:10
“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone.”
Satan is real—and he is already judged. The believer stands on the winning side.
Bottom line
Satan is real, personal, and defeated. The believer need not fear him, because Christ has already conquered him, and he flees when resisted.

- Doctrine & TheologyCan Christians be possessed by demons? No. The New Testament gives no example of a believer being demon-possessed, and Scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit dwells in every Christian. A demon cannot inhabit a body where the Holy Spirit already lives. Believers can, however, be tempted, oppressed, attacked, and harassed by the enemy—but that is not the same as possession. The Christian is sealed, indwelt, and kept by God.Read answer →

- Prophecy & End TimesWhat does the Bible say about Israel? The Bible presents Israel as God’s chosen nation—a people He called through Abraham, delivered from Egypt, and gave the land of Canaan. God made an unconditional covenant with them, and though they were scattered for disobedience, the prophets promised a future restoration. Paul insists God has not cast away His people. In this reading, the church and Israel are distinct, and God’s promises to Israel will be literally fulfilled.Read answer →

- Bible & ScriptureWho were the Nephilim? The Nephilim were extraordinary offspring produced when rebellious heavenly beings—the “sons of God”—took human women and fathered children through them (Genesis 6:1–4). They became powerful figures remembered as mighty men and giants. Rather than describing marriages between Sethites and Cainites, Genesis presents a supernatural rebellion in which divine beings crossed a God-ordained boundary between the heavenly and human realms.Read answer →
