Who is the Holy Spirit?
Short Answer
The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity: fully God and personal, not merely a force or influence. He convicts people of sin, gives believers new life, seals them for salvation, teaches Scripture, gives spiritual gifts, produces godly character, and empowers witness. Every true Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
The Father and the Son are easy enough to picture.
The Spirit is where most Christians go vague, and often end up describing something closer to electricity than to God.
The Spirit is a Person, not a force
Scripture never treats the Spirit as an it.
He teaches. He speaks. He guides. He can be lied to, resisted and grieved. None of those are things you can do to a power source.
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
He is fully God
When Ananias lied to the Spirit, Peter did not describe it as an offense against an influence.
why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost... thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
Lied to the Spirit. Lied to God. The same act, named twice.
What He does in the world
The Spirit convicts. Before anyone comes to Christ, He is the one who makes sin feel like sin.
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
No one argues another person into the kingdom. The Spirit does that work.
What He does in the believer
He gives new life.
He seals you, which is a legal word about ownership and guarantee.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
He teaches you Scripture. He gives gifts for serving others. He produces character you could not manufacture. He assures you that you belong to God.
And He does this for every Christian, not for an advanced tier of them.
He is not a power to be used
This is the most common mistake, and it runs in both directions.
Some treat Him as an energy to be tapped for results. Others treat Him as a feeling to be worked up in a room with the right music.
Neither is a Person you can know.
The ordinary evidence of His presence is not goosebumps. It is changed character, love for Christ, and a growing understanding of the Word.
So who is the Holy Spirit?
God Himself.
Not a force.
Not a feeling.
Not an optional extra for serious Christians.
He is God, present with His people, and He lives in every believer.
Bottom line
The Spirit convicts, gives new life, seals, teaches, gifts and empowers. He is not an impersonal influence to be used, but God Himself present with His people.

- Doctrine & TheologyWhat does the Bible say about women pastors?Scripture reserves the office of pastor/elder—the role of authoritative teaching and oversight of the church—for qualified men. Paul grounds this not in culture but in creation order: “I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man” (1 Timothy 2:12). This says nothing about a woman’s worth, gifts, or usefulness; women taught, served, and led in vital ways throughout Scripture. The question is the office, not the value.Read answer →

- Prophecy & End TimesWhat does the Bible say about Israel? The Bible presents Israel as God’s chosen nation—a people He called through Abraham, delivered from Egypt, and gave the land of Canaan. God made an unconditional covenant with them, and though they were scattered for disobedience, the prophets promised a future restoration. Paul insists God has not cast away His people. In this reading, the church and Israel are distinct, and God’s promises to Israel will be literally fulfilled.Read answer →

- Bible & ScriptureWho were the Nephilim? The Nephilim were extraordinary offspring produced when rebellious heavenly beings—the “sons of God”—took human women and fathered children through them (Genesis 6:1–4). They became powerful figures remembered as mighty men and giants. Rather than describing marriages between Sethites and Cainites, Genesis presents a supernatural rebellion in which divine beings crossed a God-ordained boundary between the heavenly and human realms.Read answer →
