Who Was Solomon?

Solomon is remembered as the wisest king who ever lived — a ruler so renowned that foreign queens crossed deserts just to hear him speak. He built the great Temple in Jerusalem, wrote much of the Bible's wisdom literature, and presided over the golden age of ancient Israel. Yet his story doesn't end in triumph. It ends as a warning about what happens when wisdom is no longer enough to guard the heart.

Born Into a Complicated Family

Solomon was the son of King David and Bathsheba — a union that began in scandal but became part of God's redemptive story. He came to the throne after a tense succession crisis, when his older half-brother Adonijah attempted to seize the kingdom. With his mother's help and the prophet Nathan's intervention, Solomon was anointed king while David was still alive.

The Wisdom That Made Him Famous

Early in his reign, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered him anything he wanted. Solomon could have asked for wealth, power, or a long life. Instead, he asked for a discerning heart to govern God's people well.

"Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong." — 1 Kings 3:9

God was so pleased with the request that He gave Solomon wisdom beyond any ruler before or after him — and wealth and honor on top of it. Solomon's wisdom was put on display almost immediately, in the famous case of two women who both claimed to be the mother of the same baby. His solution revealed not just intelligence, but a deep understanding of the human heart.

The Golden Age of Israel

Under Solomon, Israel reached the height of its power, wealth, and influence. He built the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem — the central place of worship for the entire nation — along with palaces, fortified cities, and a vast trade network that brought gold, spices, and exotic goods from across the ancient world. The Queen of Sheba famously traveled a great distance just to test his wisdom with hard questions, and left amazed.

The Slow Fall of a Wise Man

And yet, the same king who asked for wisdom slowly let other things crowd it out. Scripture records that Solomon married many foreign wives for political alliances, and over time their influence drew his heart toward foreign gods. The man who once built a Temple to the one true God ended up building shrines to idols — and the unity of the kingdom he inherited began to crack.

The Books He Left Behind

Solomon is traditionally credited with much of the Bible's wisdom literature — including Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. Proverbs overflows with practical insight on living well; Ecclesiastes wrestles honestly with the emptiness of chasing wealth, pleasure, and achievement apart from God — almost as if Solomon were looking back on his own life and naming exactly where it went wrong.

Why Solomon Still Matters

Solomon's life is proof that wisdom is a gift that must be guarded, not just received. Even the wisest man who ever lived could drift — not through one dramatic decision, but through a thousand small compromises. His story challenges every reader to ask: what am I slowly letting crowd out the wisdom I've been given?
