Who Was Joshua?

Joshua is one of the great warrior-leaders of the Old Testament — the man chosen by God to pick up where Moses left off, and to finally bring the Israelites into the land God had promised them centuries before. His story is one of courage, faith, and a lifelong willingness to follow God's instructions even when they made no earthly sense.

Forty Years of Waiting

Joshua doesn't appear out of nowhere. Long before he led armies, he served as Moses' assistant — a loyal aide who learned leadership under one of the greatest leaders in history. He was also one of twelve spies sent into Canaan to scout the land. When ten of the twelve came back terrified by the giants in the land, it was Joshua and Caleb alone who said: we can do this, because God is with us.

That faith cost him. The entire generation that doubted God was condemned to wander in the wilderness for forty years until they passed away. Joshua — now an old man — would be one of only two people from that original generation to set foot in the Promised Land.

The Call to Lead

After Moses died within sight of Canaan but never crossing over, God called Joshua to take command. The instruction he received is still quoted today — a command given not to a fearless soldier, but to a man who needed the same reminder we all do:

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9

The Battle of Jericho

Joshua's first major test as commander was Jericho — a heavily fortified city standing directly in Israel's path. God's battle plan was unconventional, to put it mildly: march around the city once a day for six days, then seven times on the seventh day, then blow the trumpets and shout. No siege engines. No military tactics. Just obedience.

They did exactly what God said — and the walls came down. Jericho became the defining symbol of a truth Joshua would prove again and again: in God's economy, obedience accomplishes what human strategy cannot.

A Long Campaign and a Land Divided

The conquest of Canaan wasn't a single battle. It was a prolonged military campaign that tested Joshua's leadership for years. He led Israel through victories at Ai, Gibeon, and beyond, dealing with political complexity, treacherous alliances, and moments where his own people failed to follow through on God's commands. Through it all, Joshua remained steady.

When the fighting was done, Joshua oversaw the division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel — the fulfillment of a promise God had made to Abraham centuries earlier.

A Final Challenge to Choose

At the end of his life, Joshua gathered all of Israel for one last address. He recounted everything God had done for them — and then issued a challenge that still echoes:

"Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." — Joshua 24:15

Why Joshua Still Inspires

Joshua's life is a portrait of what patient faithfulness looks like across decades. He waited forty years for his assignment. He obeyed when the plan didn't make sense. He served a leader (Moses) faithfully before he was ever given a platform of his own. In a world that prizes shortcuts, Joshua's story is a reminder that the people God prepares tend to be the ones who simply kept showing up.
