What Does the Bible Say About Fear? Courage, Trust, and "Do Not Be Afraid"

"Do not be afraid" or its equivalents appear hundreds of times in the Bible. What does the Bible say about fear? More than almost any other topic, Scripture addresses our tendency toward anxiety, terror, and uncertainty — and it always points somewhere beyond the fear.

The Two Kinds of Fear in the Bible

The Bible speaks of two very different kinds of fear. The first is the fear of the Lord — a reverent awe and respect for God called the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). The second is fear of circumstances, danger, or the unknown — the anxiety that grips us when we feel out of control.

"Do Not Be Afraid": God's Most Repeated Command

To Abraham: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward" (Genesis 15:1). To Joshua: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9). To Isaiah: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you" (Isaiah 41:10).

Jesus on Fear and Worry

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life... Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?... But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:25–33).

Psalm 23: Through the Valley

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me" (Psalm 23:4). The key: not around the valley, but through it — with God present.

Paul on Anxiety

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6–7).

1 John 4:18 — Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love" (1 John 4:18).
